The internet was originally a U.S.military project called ARPANET in 1969. The internet and the World Wide Web(WWW) are 2 different things. The internet is the interlock of computer which gives the ability for information to be transmitted. Search engines send out things called "spiders" to go through every web page and find the top/most wanted searches and brings the information to the search engines. Many searches have different amounts of web pages though, google has the most with 8.1 billion web pages, and Ask Jeeves is one of the lowest with 2.5 billion. There aren't many similar web pages between these different search engines. Some websites are not available from search engines like JSTOR or LexisNexis. Many techniques that can be used such as Phrase searching, Truncation, Boolean operators, and Search limits. Phrase searching allows you to find two or more words together using quotation marks (" "). Truncation searches by using characters as blank spaces(*,$).  Boolean operators allows you to mix search terms using things such as AND, OR, NOT. Search limits help to narrow down searches to specific topics by using things such as google's advanced search. Phrase searching is useful when looking for specific words/phrase to help narrow down a search. it's better to search for sources instead of just information. It's better to try and narrow a topic down by using these different search options, because it helps from making the sources become to broad or generalized.

1. PageRank Technology: PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance.

Digital Story 3 Narrative

Manager's Perspective. 

    In a couple of years, the Mets will be one of the best baseball team in the majors. At the moment now, we have great hitting. We got Bay, Wright, Reyes, Barajas, and Beltran. They will all most likely be on the team in years to come. We also have good defense. All the outfielders, Bay, Beltran, and Francoeur, are just great at playing their position. Reyes is good at defense, and has a great arm. Wright has already won a gold glove. Barajas is a great defensive catcher, and is also great at hitting, and managing the pitching staff. The pitching is doing a remarkable job this year. Santana is one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, Pelfrey is starting to become a great pitcher. He gets better every year. Maine is going back to his old way of throwing mostly fastballs, and it's working. Not only do the Mets have good players on the team now, but they also have a great farm team and rookies. The have Ike Davis who was brought up to the majors, and in only one month is hitting .300%, 3 home runs, 9 rbi's. Beside for his great eye at the plate, and being a great hitter, he is also showing great skill at defense. In only one month, he has made three diving catches into the dugout. He has potential, to be something special. They also have a reliever henry meija. This kid is already in the majors at the age of 20, and can pitch. His fastball is around 97mph. They also have many young prospects in their farm team. Some being Fernando martinez, Josh Thole, and Chris carter. 
    At the end of the 2010 baseball season, many great pitchers will be free agents, and the Mets plan on picking a few up. With all of these factors, the Mets are sure to be a team to beat. They will be up there with the greatest teams in baseball.

After reviewing another student's post of their culture i learned that Polish people celebrate Christmas Eve more than Christmas Day. Christmas Eve is more important to them, the do everything that ost people would d on Christmas Day on Christmas Eve. Polish people also celebrate name day, and Birthday's. Name day is when you celebrate an important person's name that is the same as yours. That is what i learned about Polish culture.

What culture means to me is the characteristics a country has. The characteristics are holidays, architecture, music, sports, etc. An example of American culture is Thanksgiving. My family's culture is Italian. Some Italian culture's are eating pasta, and also spending Sunday with your family. Every sunday my entire family goes to my grandpa's house. It is me, my mom, my dad, 5 aunts, 6 uncles, 7 cousins, and grandpa. It is really fun to see your family every week. I think everyone should do that.

Digital Story 2 Reflection.

For my second digital story i did it on my future dreams. They are reasonable dreams, like becoming a firefighter, maybe a gym teacher, and also opening up my open sports bar. The reason i want to become a firefighter, is because my dad is one. He never once complained about his job, never cares when he has to go to work. He loves it. He says it is a really fun job. All the firefighters are really friendly, and they all have a good time together. I hope this happens to me. Being a gym teacher sounds really cool too, because i love sports, and it would be great to be doing it as a job. The reason i want to open up a sports bar, is because i love watching sports, and i know other people would also. They can also get a few drinks and eat while doing it too. It'll be a good time with them and there friends.

My dreams for the future: by Kevin Cahill 

It is 2010 and i am a sophomore in High School. My dreams for the future is to become a firefighter. Right out of High School, i am going to go for training to become an EMS. From there i am hoping to take the promotional test and become a firefighter. I would like to become a firefighter by the age of 25. I would like to work in Staten Island, and maybe even in engine 164. That is in Huguenot and the firehouse is nicknamed Oz. It is the firehouse were my dad works, so i would like to work there too. Besides for being a firefighter. i would also like to live in the city for a few years. I would like to move there at the age of 21. Then when i become a firefighter, 
move back to staten island. Become a firefighter is not a guaranteed job, so if i can not become  firefighter, i would like to become a gym teacher. I am into sports, so i think that will be a great job, plus you get the weekends and summer off. 
With some money i save up, i would like to open up my own sports bar. I would like to get married. Around the age of 25. i would like to have 4 kids, two boys, and 2 girls. I would also like to own my own house, and at an early age, around 25. Those are my dreams for the future.

My first Digital Story has helped me achieve my school's Graduate Portfolio. it has mad me an Effective User of Technology. Before starting Global Technology i could not do anything with a computer, but i am starting to understand them a little bit better each day in here. i can proficiently use essential computer and communications technologies and demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate applications thereof. I proficiently use a multitude of technological tools for communication, presentation and data analysis. I can use technologies to communicate and work across national and regional boundaries. This project helped me learn how to use computers a little bit better, and helped me to achieve all of those goals. That is how the Digital Story 1 has helped me achieve my graduate portfolio.

For my digital story 2, my topic will be about the Dominican Republic. I went on vacation there in 2006, and realized how poor it was. I cannot imagine how it is to live in a third world country. The houses were about 10 feet all around squares. Some of the houses didn't even have roofs. There biggest store was about the size of a normal sized deli. I just want everyone to know how they live, and how great we have it here in America.

My name is Kevin and i am a 15 year old boy. Doing this Digital Storytelling i realized that i am achieving some of the steps of my Graduate Portfolio. I am a collaborative team member. i understand how individuals work together in a team and work as collaborative team members to achieve a goal and to learn from people from other cultures. i am also aware of and able to reflect upon their role and contributions as a member of a team and demonstrate an understanding of the value of doing so. i am a Proficient Thinker and Problem Solver. i demonstrate a capacity for mathematical analysis, scientific processing, and logical reasoning. i am academically prepared. i am intellectually curious, has a desire for life-long learning, thinks critically and effectively organizes his or her own efforts to learn. My Identity in the 21st Century:

My name is Kevin Joseph Nicolas Cahill Junior. I am a 15 year old boy. I live in Staten Island, New York. I go to shchool at College of Staten Island High School for International Studies. My best friend there is Justina Konarzewska. Most of my family lives here, on Staten Island, except for some of my cousins, but i have only seen them once, maybe twice, and a few of them never. My grandparents, great aunts, and great uncles mostly came to Staten Island from Brooklyn. I am Catholic. My family is middle class. We have a nice house, and many nice things. I was born in America, but my ancestors come from Italy and Ireland. I am mostly Italian, and partly Irish. I am pretty good at sports. I like football, baseball, handball, and bowling. I like watch football and baseball. My favorite football team is the jets and my favorite baseball team is the Mets. I am a huge Mets fan! My favorite player is David Wright. I like sports, video games, and hanging out with friends. When i get older i want to have a family. I want a nice wife and four kids. As a job i would like to be a firefighter, and i can not do that, I would like to be a gym teacher. Also, i would like to save up my money and open up a sports bar.
